Hypoxia is a state of oxygen deprivation, which in cells triggers the dimerization of HIF-α and HIF-β. The downstream cascade of HIF signaling mediates the low oxygen state by increasing iron absorption and subsequent transport to the bone marrow where it is used for the production of red blood cells.
