Mechanism of ADAR Animation

Executive Summary

In this case study, we explore how XVIVO partnered with Korro Bio to create two innovative medical animations that simplified complex RNA editing concepts, enhancing understanding and engagement among scientists, investors, and the general public.

“Working with XVIVO has been a game-changer for our educational initiatives, and the experience of working with XVIVO was great. Everyone was very polite, very professional and the quality of the work is fantastic. I mean the animations speak for themselves.  When I finally showed the work, we had been developing to my team, we got a huge round of applause!” – Chris Brown, Korro Bio.

RNA editing

Introduction

Korro Bio, a leading biotechnology company specializing in RNA editing technologies, sought to educate stakeholders about their cutting-edge processes. They turned to XVIVO for a solution to clearly communicate their scientific story.

ADAR and RNA

Problem

Korro Bio faced challenges in conveying the intricacies of RNA editing, a relatively under-known field compared to genome editing, to a broad audience. They also needed to shine a light on the fact that they are targeting the RNA and not the genome.

“You’ve got all sorts of technologies that are not well known by people… You’ve got enzymes in the cell that people have never heard of. You’re talking about nucleotides that not very many people know about. And then in an environment which pretty much nobody knows about. So, it’s a bunch of complicated stories that need to be told in a clear and simplified manner.”

So Korro needed animations to simplify as much as possible but keep all those core themes still in there to visually walk people through their science so that their audience could understand it all.

“Through animation, you don’t have to know the chemistry involved at all, as seeing it happen actually makes that understandable”

ADAR and Mutated RNA

Solution

XVIVO developed two animations for Korro Bio, the Mechanism of ADAR Animation, and an animation detailing Korro’s RNA editing oligonucleotide candidate for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) from their proprietary OPERA™ platform.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD) Animation

The animations that XVIVO developed illustrated Korro’s RNA editing mechanisms, indirectly emphasizing the differences from genome editing. The animations aimed to make Korro’s science accessible and engaging to both specialists and non-specialists.

Implementation

The process began with in-depth consultations with Korro Bio’s scientists to ensure accuracy. XVIVO’s team created a script and storyboards that captured the essence of RNA editing. Advanced animation techniques were used to visualize molecular processes, making the complex technology understandable. The project included:

Script Development: Collaboration with Korro Bio’s team to draft a clear and concise script.

Storyboarding: Creating detailed storyboards to map out the visual narrative.

Animation Production: Utilizing high-end animation software to bring the storyboards to life.

Voiceover and Final Edits: Professional voiceover to guide the narrative, followed by meticulous editing to ensure a polished final product.

Results

“Having these animations will really help the general public. It will help investors as they come and look at the website. It will help prospective employees that are looking for positions to understand what we’re doing here at Korro”.

Conclusion

XVIVO’s collaboration with Korro Bio demonstrates the power of visual storytelling in biotechnology. The animation not only simplifies extremely complex topics but will also significantly enhance their audiences understanding and engagement.
