This first video in a 9-part series of animations on the immune system and vaccines features a virus encountering and entering a human lung cell. We follow the virus’ journey after it enters the body through the airway and see the operatic beauty and the randomness of the virus’ path. Ultimately, the viral particle makes contact with a human cell, and we learn how the virus tricks the cell into letting it enter.

The key to cell entry is binding of protein ‘keys’ on the viral
particle surface to receptor ‘locks’ on the lung cell. This animation sets the foundation of understanding for the other videos in the series by accurately depicting the relative size of a viral particle to a human cell and the point of infection onset.
