Calcium-channels facilitate the movement of calcium ions across cell membranes, as a result, changing the electric potential within the cells. Such channels are used by neurons to propagate signals by initiating an action potential. These electrical signals are essential for communication of motor and sensory stimuli to their relevant destinations where an appropriate response can be produced.
